Oriol Romeu will not play again this season after the Chelsea midfielder underwent surgery on a knee injury suffered in the Premier League victory over Sunderland at the weekend, the
Romeu damaged his anterior cruciate ligament and medial meniscus, needing reconstructive surgery on the former and a repair to the latter. Romeu was forced off after 20 minutes against the Black Cats, to be replaced by Oscar. The Spanish midfielder has remained in London for treatment while his teammates prepare for the Club World Cup in Japan.
It was initially hoped Romeu could make a speedy recovery and travel to Japan for the competition, but further examinations showed the extent of the problem and revealed the need for surgery.
Romeu has made nine appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring once, having moved to the club last summer from Barcelona. A graduate of the Catalan club’s academy, Romeu has made 33 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club.
