Ferguson backs Rooney to come good for Man Utd in vital derby

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney is ready to come to the fore when Manchester United meet Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the Premier League season this weekend, Sky Sports has reported.

Rooney was the only player from the 4-3 win over Reading last Saturday to play for United in the Champions League defeat against Cluj on Wednesday, with the manager insisting that Rooney needed the added game time after missing a portion of the season through injury and illness.

Ferguson added that now Rooney has more playing time in his legs this season, he expects the England international to be fully prepared for the challenge of playing the reigning Premier League champions at their own ground.

Wayne has another 90 minutes under his belt and hopefully by Sunday he is in real top form. He is approaching that now but Sunday will be a different kettle of fish altogether,” Ferguson said.

Rooney missed time earlier in the campaign after suffering a severe cut to his thigh in a collision with Fulham forward Hugo Rodallega, and was also absent recently after a bout of tonsillitis. Thus far, Rooney has netted only five goals in 16 games for United, and the brace he bagged against Reading were his first goals since mid-November.
