Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded that Manchester United defend better from now on as the derby with Premier League champions Manchester City looms on the horizon, the
The United back line will however have to cope without Nemanja Vidic for a little while longer, the manager revealed, admitting that the club captain has no chance of being fit to play Roberto Mancini’s side on Sunday. It had been hoped that Vidic could make his return from knee surgery in the Champions League on Wednesday, against Cluj, but the Serbian withdrew from the game and his chances of playing against City went as well.
United conceded three goals inside the first-half against Reading in their last Premier League outing, hitting back in the same opening 45 minutes with four efforts of their own to take the points and remain top of the table ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium. Nevertheless, despite the victory, Ferguson was distinctly unimpressed with the manner in which it came.
He said: “It’s a worry, it’s a concern. If we perform like that on Sunday, then God knows what’s going to happen to us. You see the goals against, we’ve lost 32 goals this season. I can’t ever remember us losing so many goals before Christmas. I must say that.
“So it is a concern, there’s no question about that. When you look at the side City could put out, with [Mario] Balotelli, [Edin] Dzeko…all really tall players, then it’s going to be a really big challenge for us.”
