Manchester City full-back Maicon has backed his club to claim the Champions League crown, albeit not this season, reports Sky
City have already been eliminated from this season’s competition, but Maicon, who joined City in the summer from Inter, is confident that it is only a matter of time before they claim Europe’s biggest prize.
“There is nothing missing at City. It is a great club and is working to get better in the Champions League. You can see us progressing on a monthly basis,” Maicon said.
“The club is growing all the time, and sooner or later City will win the Champions League because everyone is working for that.”
City, currently bottom of Group D and without a win in the competition so far this season, can still qualify for the Europa League if they Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday and Ajax fail to pick up any points against Real Madrid.
And Maicon has targeted a place in the Europa League, insisting that the players want to be part of European competition. “We are playing for pride on Tuesday, but also for practical reasons, because we want to carry on playing in Europe, even if it is not in the top competition,” the Brazilian added.
“The Europa League is important to us, so we need to try to stay in Europe until the end of the season if we can.”
