Rodgers issues warning to Sterling after new Liverpool contract

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Raheem Sterling that he cannot rest on his laurels, Sky Sports reports.

The young Liverpool winger is expected to sign a new contract with Liverpool this week, believed to be for five years. Having started 16 of Liverpool’s 17 league games this season, Sterling has cemented himself as a regular in Rodgers starting line-up, bu, Rodgers has said that Sterling will not be getting complacent at Anfield, insisting that earning a new contract means a lot more work in the future.

I always congratulate players when they sign a new contract and then I warn them,” Rodgers said. “I tell them they need to decide after this contract whether there is going to be another at one of the biggest clubs in the world or whether it will be at a different level.

They can’t rely on this contract, and I make sure they know that. They got that contract for what they have done in the past.

Sterling joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers as a 16-year-old, and made a handful of substitute appearances under former manager Kenny Dalglish. However, Rodgers has shown great faith in the England youngster, making him a regular player in his starting XI.

This was followed by Sterling being given his full international call-up to the England squad earlier this season. He has scored one goal and provided two assists in the Premier League, and has helped his side reach the Europa League round of 32.

Liverpool face Fulham on Saturday evening, with Rodgers confident that Sterling’s contract will have been sorted out by then.
