Scholes, Giggs and Ferdinand to leave Man Utd at end of the season

Three stalwarts of Manchester United’s long-term success, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand, are expected to leave the club at the end of the season as manager Sir Alex Ferguson pushes through a regeneration of the squad at Old Trafford, the Daily Mail has reported.

Each of the three players are due to see their contracts expire at the end of the current campaign. Scholes, who has retired and returned to action once already, plans to hang up his boots once and for all, while Ferdinand has yet to decide if he wants to play on for another season after his history of back trouble. Giggs is said to be in a similar position, contemplating retirement after spending his entire career with United.

In an effort to plan ahead, Ferguson has had scouts watch centre-backs Ezequiel Garay, Benfica’s former Real Madrid player, and Vegard Forren, a Norwegian defender, both of whom are among the candidates to replace Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, the club captain who has spent much of the last 12 months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Between them, Giggs, Scholes and Ferdinand have won 27 league titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups and five Champions Leagues, making more than 2,000 United appearances – over 900 of which come from Giggs alone – and over 200 international appearances for their respective countries.
