Agent of Chelsea defender Cole in talks with Real Madrid

The next step in Ashley Cole’s career could become clear sooner rather than later after the agent of the Chelsea defender – who has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge in the summer when his contract expires – travelled to Spain to speak with Real Madrid, the Daily Mail has reported.

Cole is in the same boat as England colleague Frank Lampard, with both players told they will not be offered new deals at their current club once their existing contracts run out this summer. Now Cole has entered the final six months of his contract he is free to speak to clubs outside England, which the Mail claims his agent has begun doing.

Interest in Cole is not confined to Madrid alone, however, as Barcelona are also said to be monitoring the status of the former Arsenal player. Cole is understood to favour a move to Spain despite interest from French club Paris Saint-Germain who, like Jose Mourinho’s Madrid, are coached by a former Chelsea manager – Carlo Ancelotti, in PSG’s case.

However, Cole could still be reunited with Ancelotti in Madrid after the Italian was linked with replacing Mourinho, should the Portuguese’s relationship with his current employers reach the point of no return and Ancelotti succumb to the pressure he is under in Paris. The former Milan Coach would then be among the favourites to replace Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It was Mourinho who took Cole to Chelsea from the Gunners in 2006, with Cole going on to play almost 300 games for the Blues, winning the league title once, the FA Cup four times and the Champions League, to add to the two league titles and three FA Cups won under Arsene Wenger.
