It’s not often that Gerard Pique is in a position where he has to admit he’s been outclassed, but that’s where the Barcelona defender found himself after meeting the winner of the 2012 FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC), Alfonso Ramos, on the virtual football field. And as if to make matters worse, Ramos is a Real Madrid fan.
The FIWC is a tournament organised by FIFA, EA Sports and PlayStation. Ramos’ prize for winning 2012’s competition was the chance to meet Pique, his Barcelona teammates Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi and attend the FIFA Ballon d’Or event, where Messi won his fourth consecutive prize.
Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Ramos guide Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Pique’s Barcelona, with the centre-back having every reason to be unhappy with his virtual self as the computerised Pique was sent off before half-time.
Madrid led by only a single goal at the interval but Ramos wrapped up the victory after the break, thanks no doubt to the advice he received in his half-time team talk – from Iniesta and Messi, no less.
Pique though was magnanimous in defeat: “Alfonso is the best player I have played against for sure. I don’t play FIFA as much as I’d like to, but I’m usually in the final against Leo (Messi) when we play at Barcelona so I’m not bad, but against Alfonso every player seems bad!”
And to his credit, Ramos didn’t gloat over his victory, despite the Madridista getting one over a Cule such as Pique. Instead, he was in awe at the whole experience: “Winning the FIWC and getting the chance to attend the FIFA Ballon d’Or really is a dream come true.
“For any football fan this is without question one of the greatest experiences you can have. Meeting my heroes an getting the chance to play FIFA 13 against Pique is something I will never forget.”
Already, 1.6m people have signed up for the 2013 edition of the tournament to make it the world’s largest online gaming event, with the grand final taking place in Madrid. Played via the PlayStation network, interested participants can sign up in-game through FIFA 13 on their PS3.
