Benitez insists he has support of Chelsea owner Abramovich

Rafael Benitez has insisted that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is happy with the club’s progress since the former Liverpool manager was appointed in November, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Benitez replaced Roberto Di Matteo after a sketchy run of form but has overseen some mixed results in his time at Stamford Bridge, beating Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday but losing at home to Swansea City in the first-leg of the League Cup semi-final among them.

Speaking ahead of the second-leg, to be played on Wednesday evening at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium, Benitez was adamant that he enjoys a positive relationship with the Russian owner, who was at Stamford Bridge to watch the Blues beat Arsenal.

Benitez said: “Without giving too many details, [Abramovich] was really pleased with the game. He has ideas. I do too. We share ideas. It’s fine. We explained to each other what we’re trying to do. It’s fine.

There has been growing speculation that former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, now at Real Madrid, is angling for a return to his old club, but Benitez, a long-time adversary of Mourinho from when they were opposite numbers at Liverpool and Chelsea respectively, is not concerned by the machinations of the Portuguese, the Mirror adds.
