Chelsea interim Rafael Benitez manager has said that he would like to stay on at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of the season, Sky
Benitez has been given charge of the London club for the rest of this season after taking over from Roberto Di Matteo in November. And while Chelsea currently find themselves third, speculation over Benitez’s future at the end of the season remains rife, with many supporters still not backing his appointment and Chelsea’s form being inconsistent since the Spaniard took over.
However, Benitez admits that he is excited about his future prospects should he succeed at Chelsea, and that includes possibly extending his contract with the club. “A lot of doors can be opened, but the main one is this one here [at Chelsea],” Benitez said.
But Benitez admits that a move to another Premier League club may also be a possibility/ He added: “Staying in the Premier League is my priority but I am a professional and may have to consider other options when thinking about the future. I’m focused on winning here for the moment.”
Chelsea have won six of their 11 Premier League games under Benitez this season, as well as having navigated their Third Round FA Cup tie against Southampton. However, Chelsea’s home form under Benitez has come under heavy scrutiny, with last weekend’s 2-1 win over Arsenal only their second league win in six attempts. The Blues also need to overturn a 2-0 deficit in their Capital One Cup semi-final against Swansea, played on Wednesday evening.
Benitez remains upbeat about the performance of his team and drew a lot of positives from their crucial win over Arsenal. “Chelsea is an ideal club because we can stll win trophies. If we continue to play in the way we did against Arsenal, everybody will be pleased,” Benitez said.
“When I say everybody, I mean everybody – the fans, the owner, the staff, the players and everybody. When the team is doing well, it will give me a way to move forward.”
