Ashley Cole has ended speculation regarding his footballing future by agreeing a one year contract extension to stay at Chelsea, reports The
It had been expected that the 32-year-old would leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, as the left-back held out for a two year extension. He even indicated to the club that he would be willing to take a cut in his salary in order to remain.
The former Arsenal defender eventually agreed to the customary one-year extension offered to players over the age of 30 at the club, despite media reports linking him with a move to the likes of Man United, Real Madrid or big spending PSG.
The news also calls into question the prospective transfer of Everton left-back Leighton Baines, who has recently been linked with a move to West London. Baines has been earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for Cole.
The defender has made 200 appearances thus far in his Chelsea career, netting seven goals in the process, and is also just one international cap shy of completing a century of appearances for England. A formal announcement is expected on Monday confirming the extension.
