Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool brought with it an important three points as the manager tries to regain the Premier League title, the
United are currently seven points clear of defending champions Manchester City, and if Ferguson’s side hold on to their advantage United would claim their 20th league title, two more than nearest rivals Liverpool.
That United defeated the second-most successful team in the history of English football was what, according to Ferguson, made the 2-1 win all the more pleasing, as well as the points it delivered to keep United clear of City.
Ferguson said: “I’ve said many times it’s a fantastic challenge between the two most successful teams in the country. I think those three points today are very, very important ones.
“When you play Liverpool, you’ve got to be on your best form to win, and I thought this was our best form.”
United were victorious thanks to goals from Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic, the Dutch striker netting in the first-half and the Serbian defender the second, with Vidic’s goal coming as the ball struck him following Patrice Evra’s headed attempt on goal.
Liverpool replied through Daniel Sturridge but United held on to record a second victory over the season over the Anfield side, after winning by the same scoreline at Liverpool’s ground earlier in the campaign.
