Chelsea are attempting to pip Premier League rivals Manchester City to the signing of Malaga midfielder Isco, the
Manchester City were understood to be leading the chase for Isco after Roberto Mancini was directed to the player by Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football. Begiristain, formerly an employee of Barcelona, was aware of Isco from his time in La Liga and with Malaga said to be attempting to extend Isco’s contract and raise his minimum release fee clause in the process, City were considering making an approach.
If the 20-year-old’s terms are renewed by the south coast club then it would see his buyout clause rise to £30m, enough to make him one of Chelsea’s record purchases, behind Fernando Torres. Isco would join compatriots Juan Mata and Cesar Azpilicueta if he was to move to Stamford Bridge, with David Silva and Javi Garcia the Spanish contingent at the Etihad Stadium.
Isco has made 22 appearances for Malaga this season, scoring six goals and helping the team to fourth in La Liga and the second round of the Champions League, qualifying from a group containing Milan, Anderlecht and Zenit St. Petersburg.
