Moyes keen to bring new faces to Everton

David Moyes will work hard to bring new faces to Everton before the transfer window closes on Thursday, Sky Sports has reported, but the manager admits money is still tight at the Premier League club.

Moyes took charge of his 500th Everton game on Saturday as his side booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a win over Championship side Bolton Wanderers, a late John Heitinga goal proving the difference as the Toffees won 2-1. Steven Pienaar had put Everton in front in the first-half, only for Marvin Sordell to level.

Everton have thus far been quiet in the January window, not yet making any transfers despite the usual gossip linking the club with a host of players. It is a stark contrast to 12 months ago when Moyes was able to sign Landon Donovan and Steven Pienaar on loan and Nikica Jelavic and Darron Gibson on permanent deals, having let Diniyar Bilyaletdinov return to Russia.

Moyes said: “When I took the job 500 games ago, I knew the situation wasn’t going to be having lots and lots of cash to spend. I cannot suddenly turn around and say ‘Hey, where’s the cash?’ because that wasn’t in the agreement.

A lot of my time in the next week will be devoted to trying to get someone in but more of my time will be devoted to trying to win the games we have. I will tell the chairman what we need and hope we can do it together. I know exactly, he gives me every penny.

He continued: “We are pretty straightforward at the club, if you don’t have it you can’t spend it. But if I have to have a bet on whether we will get someone in, then I would back myself to do it. I can’t tell you which position we are looking for because sometimes in the January window it’s a question of looking for a number of options and seeing who comes along.

Everton’s cup victory over Bolton set up a meeting with the conquerors of their local rivals Liverpool, Oldham Athletic, who in 2008 knocked Everton out of the same competition by winning 1-0 at Goodison Park.
