David Silva believes Manchester City cannot afford to lose another match this season – otherwise they will hand the Premier League title to Manchester United, Sky
The two Manchester clubs are currently separated by seven points following their respective victories at the weekend – 2-1 over Liverpool at Old Trafford for United and 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal for City.
With United playing first on Sunday, City went into the game against the Gunners trailing the league leaders by 10 points, a difference Silva says could be terminal if it was allowed to become the norm.
The win over Arsenal pegged the gap back to seven points but the Spanish playmaker has warned that if City drop points again – and United win – then the Premier League title race could be decided there and then.
He said: “If we lose, then suddenly the gap is 10 points and that is when it gets really difficult. But if we keep fighting we hope that they will falter.
“All we can do, whatever the gap is, is keep going, every game, and put them under the pressure of knowing that if they lose a game or drop any points, we will get closer to them.”
Silva added that United’s continued participation in the Champions League – they meet Real Madrid in a two-legged tie next month and early March – could help tilt the balance of the league in City’s favour.
