Tottenham confirm Holtby deal

Tottenham have agreed a pre-contract agreement with Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby, that will see the Germany international join the club in the summer, the club have confirmed.

A statement on the club’s official website confirms that the deal, subject to a medical, will see the Germany U21 captain join up with the Spurs squad in July, allowing him to move on a free transfer, whilst also completing the current Bundesliga season.

Holtby, 22, impressed in the Champions League group stages, especially in the two fixtures against Arsenal, and with his contract up for renewal, there was much speculation over a possible move to the Premier League.

Tottenham assistant manager Steffen Freund earlier in the day talked warmly about his compatriot: ‘For Lewis it would not be a problem because he is half-English and loves the Premier League. He is out of contract at the age of 22. I don’t think I have to say any more. I don’t know him well but what I can say is that he is a really good player.’

Holtby is in his second season with the Schalke, first-team, following a 3.8m Euro move from Alemannia Aachen in 2009. He has also been capped three times for Germany’s national team.
