Arsenal can beat anyone, insists Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen believes Arsenal are good enough to beat any opposition, claiming that even when their results have not backed up the claim their performances often have, ESPN has reported.

The Gunners are currently sixth in the table, a point behind Everton and four adrift of Tottenham Hotspur, who hold the final Champions League qualification place. Arsenal were knocked out of the League Cup by League Two side Bradford City, who went on to reach the final, and face Blackburn Rovers in the next round of the FA Cup. The Champions League, meanwhile, sees Arsene Wenger’s side face Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

Vermaelen however is confident that if Arsenal are at their best, they can see off all challengers. The Belgium international said: “You could see it from the start of the season that this team has a lot of potential. We have enough quality in this team to beat anybody.

I think you could see that in the games we played against top teams. We didn’t get the results we wanted, but I think in some parts of the games we played well.

Arsenal on Saturday play Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, the sight of a 2-1 victory in the league last season, the winner scored by Thierry Henry. But a week later the sides met at the same venue in the FA Cup and the home team were victorious, winning 2-0.
