Arsenal send scout to watch Wanyama in Celtic’s Champions League defeat

A senior Arsenal scout was among the interested parties watching as Celtic lost to Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, the Daily Mail has reported, with the Gunners representative said to be monitoring the performance of Victor Wanyama, the Kenyan midfielder.

Arsene Wenger is understood to be keen to sign a physical ball-winning midfielder in the summer having missed the chance to do so in January. During the recently-closed transfer window Arsenal were linked with moves for the likes of West Ham’s Mohamed Diame and Toulouse’s Etienne Capoue, but the only player signing in at the Emirates Stadium was Malaga left-back Nacho Monreal.

The newspaper claims that the performance of Wanyama – and the scout’s opinion of it – will be crucial to deciding whether or not Wenger pushes ahead with a move for the 21-year-old at the end of the season. Celtic lost the match 3-0.

Wanyama, who joined Celtic from Belgian club Beerschot in 2011, became the first Kenyan to score in the Champions League earlier this season when he netted for the Bhoys in their 2-1 win over Barcelona.
