Beckham made PSG move to avoid playing Man Utd

David Beckham has admitted that part of the attraction of moving to French side Paris Saint-Germain was that it meant he would not come up against Manchester United in the Premier League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Beckham left LA Galaxy in December and was a free agent as the transfer window came to a close on Thursday, which meant he was free to move to a new club outside the window. But after what has been described as “weeks of secret negotiations” Beckham and PSG came to an agreement, the midfielder passing a medical and being presented to the world’s press that evening.

The former England captain revealed that he had offers to return to the Premier League, believed to be from Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United, but could not bring himself to accept the invitations to resume his career in English football as he would have to have played against United, his former club and the team he supported as a boy.

Beckham said: “I’ve been successful with Manchester United and have always said I would never want to play for another English club. I’ve a lot of history with Manchester United. They were the team I supported and dreamed of playing for.

I was honoured by the other offers I’ve had from other Premier League teams. I’m very lucky. I’m 37 years old and was offered a lot of offers, more now than I’ve had in my career, and at my age.

But unless it was Manchester United, I wouldn’t want to play for any other Premier League team. I couldn’t do it.
