Chelsea have identified Southampton left-back Luke Shaw as the player to replace Ashley Cole in the long-run, having already had a £10m offer rejected for the teenager, the
Southampton turned down the offer in the January transfer window but Chelsea have not given up on signing the 17-year-old yet. Shaw, an England U-21 international, has also caught the eye of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but Chelsea are believed to be the favourites to sign the player if he does leave the south coast this summer.
Shaw has made 20 appearances for Southampton – 19 of them coming this season, mostly in the Premier League. He has also graduated from the England youth set-up into the U-21s and the fringes of the senior international squad.
Chelsea would be willing to loan Shaw back to Southampton for next season if he made the move to Stamford Bridge this summer. A long-term replacement for the experienced Cole is said to be high on the agenda at Chelsea, although the former Arsenal defender signed a one-year contract extension recently.
