Roberto Mancini expects that by the end of February, his Manchester City side will be much closer to Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table, the
United could go as much as 10 points clear of City by Saturday evening, if they beat Fulham at Craven Cottage, while City have to wait until Sunday afternoon to play Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium. The gap currently stands at seven points, before the weekend’s fixtures, after United beat Southampton in midweek but City could only draw with Queens Park Rangers.
Mancini however is of the opinion that even if United to extend their advantage they will not be able to maintain it. The Italian stressed that there is still a lot of football to be played in the season, particularly for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who face a Champions League double-header against Real Madrid this month and next, whereas City are out of European competition altogether.
“In every championship, never has one team won a title in January. We should fight until April. If they have seven, eight, nine points in April it could be difficult. But in this moment we have a big chance,” Mancini said.
He added: “ Every team during the season has two or three weeks when they don’t play well, when their performances go down and they don’t score. Even if you have fantastic strikers, like the situation we had last year, there were some moments when we scored three or four goals a game but then didn’t score for three or four games and we didn’t know why. It could be the same for them now.”
