Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has described Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as one of the best players in the Premier League ahead of the meeting between the two teams on Sunday, the
City host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium with Suarez expected to lead the visitors’ forward line, and Mancini has been waxing lyrical about the Uruguay international ahead of the match. The Mirror claims, however, that Suarez will be a summer transfer target for the champions.
“Suarez for me is a top player,” Mancini said. “I like him because he is strong and he works hard. For me, he is one of the best in England,” he added. When asked if that meant he would launch a summer bid to take Suarez to City, the Italian laughed off the question, only re-affirming his admiration for the player.
The Mirror claims that Suarez is expected to be one of the hottest properties of the summer, with a host of clubs lining up to test his resolve to remain on Merseyside – and also the club’s determination to keep him. Bayern Munich have been linked with a £40m bid.
Mancini also revealed that current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was a candidate to become his assistant in 2010. They met to discuss the position but Mancini plumped for David Platt, a former teammate and fluent speaker of Italian, but he was fulsome in his praise for the former Swansea City boss.
