Wilshere insists Arsenal players must take the blame for Bayern Munich defeat

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has come to the defence of under-fire manager Arsene Wenger by insisting the players are to blame for the Gunners’ Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, the Daily Mail has reported.

Bayern won 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening, increasing the pressure on the beleaguered Wenger, the defeat coming just days after Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship Blackburn Rovers.

With League Two Bradford City putting Arsenal out of the League Cup and Arsenal barely a factor in the Premier League title race, the North London club are facing another year without a trophy.

That has led to supporter unrest, with a section of the crowd vocalising their unhappiness during the loss to the Bundesliga leaders, but Wilshere has moved to shield Wenger from criticism, saying the players must take responsibility for what happens on the pitch.

Wilshere added: “I don’t think it’s anything to do with the manager. He puts us on the pitch, it’s down to us to perform and get the best out of us every week…a manager can put us on the pitch and motivate us but we have to do it when we’re on the pitch and at the moment we’re starting badly and getting punished for it.

The England international continued: “I think the players will take responsibility, we’re man enough to take it. The boss has been here for 16 years and he’s been doing a great job so you can’t question him.
