Premier League strugglers Reading have appointed former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins as their new manager, the BBC
Reading sacked Brian McDermott earlier in March after a run of defeats threatened the Royals’ top flight future. McDermott had previously been named manager of the month for January and took Reading to promotion from the Championship last season.
Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet was given permission by the Championship club to speak to Reading about the vacancy, but the Uruguayan elected to stay with his current employers. Former Swindon Town manager Paulo Di Canio was also linked with the post.
Adkins’ services were dispensed with by Southampton in January, the Saints appointing former Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino instead. Adkins led Southampton out of League One with consecutive promotions and Southampton were three points clear of the bottom three at the time of the change.
Reading are currently 19th in the table, seven points short of safety with eight games to play. Adkins’ first match in charge will be against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this weekend, with his first home game at Reading’s Madejski Stadium coming against his former employers, Southampton.
