Chelsea close to sealing Mourinho return

Jose Mourinho is in line to make a return to Chelsea this summer, the Daily Mail has reported, with a deal between the current Real Madrid manager and owner Roman Abramovich said to be nearly completed.

Mourinho was previously in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007, winning the Premier League title twice before leaving early in the 2007/08 season. He has since managed Inter, winning the Champions League with the Italians, before moving to La Liga, where he won the title with Madrid last season.

This season has not gone so well, however, with Mourinho’s Madrid 13 points behind league leaders Barcelona, and the Mail adds that the Portuguese has long targeted a return to English football as his next step once he leaves the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid remain in contention to win the Champions League this season – having beaten Manchester United in the past round and due to face Galatasaray next – and the club’s continued participation in the competition means the deal between Mourinho and Chelsea is to remain quiet, the newspaper says.

Rafael Benitez is currently the interim Chelsea manager, having been appointed in November 2012 to replace Roberto Di Matteo.
