Roy Hodgson was told Wayne Rooney to expect to be provoked by Montenegro when England play a World Cup qualifier at the scene of a red card for the Manchester United striker almost 18 months ago, ESPN
Rooney was dismissed in 2011 for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the 2-2 draw between the sides, and subsequently missed the first two group games of Euro 2012. Hodgson is said to be planning to speak with the whole squad, not just Rooney, about the need to keep calm in what is likely to be a febrile atmosphere.
Hodgson said: “They are the type of things players need to come to terms with and be prepared for. All the players will be made aware that we are playing away against an important rival for the top spot in the group. They have to be ready to play the game, tactically, technically and mentally.”
The manager rejected the suggestion that he needed to speak with Rooney directly about his behaviour, pointing to an improved disciplinary record and the player’s acknowledgement that he was in the wrong for lashing out at an opponent.
