Liverpool and Manchester United are fighting it out to win the signature of Brazilian centre-back Dede, the
Dede, currently with Vasco de Gama, has been tipped as the player Brazil will build their defence around at next year’s World Cup, but his club cannot afford to keep him much longer. Financial problems mean Vasco will be forced into selling the 24-year-old this summer, with Liverpool and United joining Juventus and Benfica in pursuing the £15m-rated player.
Liverpool are thought to be in the driving seat, having watched Dede for around a year now and built a relationship with the group that owns a majority stake of his registration. Brendan Rodgers is understood to want to sign two centre-backs this summer, with Jamie Carragher having announced his retirement from football at the end of the season.
The Merseyside club can also offer Dede the presence of two compatriots, Lucas Leiva and Philippe Coutinho, while United have Rafael da Silva in their squad – with his twin brother Fabio out on loan at Queens Park Rangers.
