Liverpool plan Xabi Alonso return

Liverpool could be looking to bring Xabi Alonso back to Anfield, after the Spanish international reportedly stalled on a new contract, Metro reports.

Alonso left Merseyside in 2009 after five years at Liverpool, which saw him win the Champions League and turn into one of the most highly rated midfielders in the Premier League. During his time at Real Madrid, the 31 year old has won the Copa del Rey and La Liga and has forged his place in the Spanish national side that has broken records at the World Cup and the European Championships. However, despite his Madrid success, Alonso now seems keen on a move away from the Bernabeu after contract talks stalled.

The Spanish international’s deal with the La Liga side expires at the end of next season and his apparent reluctance to remain with Madrid has attracted potential suitors, which include Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers has reportedly made enquiries for Alonso in recent months and the Reds could step up their interest this summer, if a new deal has not been arranged.

Alonso commented at the start of the year that he would consider a return to the Premier League if a deal does not work out. The 31 year old said: “I have not decided on my future. I will only stay at Real Madrid if I can offer the same level on the pitch as I can now and we will see what happens in the next few months. There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there”.
