The Welsh international has been plagued by the injury since October and it has now become so bad that Allen’s movement is severely restricted. With the recovery period in mind, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers and his backroom staff must now decide when Allen will go under the knife.
The ex-Swansea midfielder wants to help Liverpool secure European football next season but Rodgers is not keen on postponing surgery until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old came off the bench on Sunday to help his side to a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League but now looks likely to have the operation no later than early April.
After being signed for £15m from the Welsh club last summer, Allen has played 36 times under Rodgers this season, scoring twice.
