Manchester United winger Luis Nani believes he has plenty more to offer his team this season – and wants to prove to Sir Alex Ferguson that he was right to trust in him in the Champions League tie with Real Madrid, TeamTalk
Nani was a surprise starter against the Spanish side but helped United to a 1-0 lead before he was controversially sent off in the second-half. Madrid made the most of the man advantage, scoring twice to win the two-legged contest 3-2 on aggregate and progress to the quarter-final stage.
The Portugal international is approaching the final year of his United contract but is focused on showing his worth to Ferguson. He said: “I feel I’m in good form and I’ve nearly arrived at my peak. I think over the next few games I can surprise a few people. I want to show the manager that he can trust me and he can believe in me in every match.
“My confidence is high and I think the best is still to come from me. This is my time – and I think I can be important for the team in these big games.”
Nani added that he believes he can make the most out of missing two months of the campaign through injury, claiming it means he is fresh now when others might be starting to tire.
“Because I was injured for two months, it means I’m fresh now when some other players are starting to get tired. I want to show [Ferguson] my contribution can help win games, so I’ll keep working hard to make sure I’m ready every time I get a chance.”
Nani has been a United player since the summer of 2007, moving from Sporting Lisbon at the same time Brazil midfielder Anderson left another Portuguese side, Porto, for the current Premier League leaders.
