Newcastle can win Europa League, says Ben Arfa

French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa believes that Newcastle are good enough to win the Europa League this season, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Magpies embarked on a spending spree in January in an attempt to improve their stuttering league form, recruiting five players at a cost of around £17m.

And the ex-Lyon winger is insistent that the squad now possesses enough quality to challenge for European honours.

Ben Arfa said: “We have a stronger team than we had before January. It’s good because last season we did very well and finished fifth, but the squad wasn’t very big. Now, with the players coming in, it is even stronger and we can do something similar again. The squad is better than it was.

I hope we can do good things in the Europa League, I hope we can win it. It is important we climb the Premier League and not fall into the Championship, but this is also important. This is a chance to win a trophy and that is something the whole squad are excited about.

Newcastle take on moneybags Anzhi Makhachkala in the last 16 of the Europa League, with the first leg taking place in Russia on Thursday evening.
