Dzeko, according to the newspaper, is in talks with Dortmund over a summer move as the Bundesliga club expect to lose Lewandowski to United. Rooney would then be allowed to leave Old Trafford – although there is no guarantee United will get the price they are seeking.

Rooney was left on the bench for United’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday, with reports later suggesting Sir Alex Ferguson was willing to let Rooney leave the club this summer. Rooney, 27, has two years remaining on his United contract.
