Benteke has enjoyed an impressive season, his first in English football, even as Villa have struggled at the wrong end of the table under Paul Lambert, who replaced Alex McLeish in the Villa Park hot seat last summer. Moving from Genk for £8m, the 22-year-old Benteke has 17 goals to his name in all competitions, including a spell of six goals in five games between January and February.
Villa are currently a place outside the relegation zone, three points ahead of Wigan Athletic, but have played a game more than the FA Cup semi-finalists. Benteke has proven crucial in Villa’s last two games, against fellow relegation candidates Reading and Queens Park Rangers, scoring in both the 2-1 win over the Royals at the Madejski Stadium and the 3-2 triumph at home to Harry Redknapp’s QPR.
