Saturday’s late kick-off sees Liverpool travel to relegation-threatened Wigan looking for their first win at the DW Stadium since a certain Rafa Benitez’ time in charge in the 2007-08 season.
Wigan come into the game in impressive form after first dispatching Huddersfield in the FA Cup fifth round with consummate ease before easing past relegation rivals Reading by an emphatic 3-0 scoreline at the Madejski Stadium. Key to both victories has been the pace and finishing shown by striker Arouna Kone, who is expected to continue in attack for the Latics partnered by Franco Di Santo.
Elsewhere, Antolin Alcaraz could be handed a first start after returning from a six-month lay-off with a groin problem against Reading last week, while Ryo Miyaichi could also take his place on the substitutes bench after three months out with an ankle injury. Ivan Ramis (knee), Ben Watson (leg) and Albert Crusat (knee) remain absent.
Liverpool are looking to close in on local rivals Everton, though the Reds’ fight for a Champions League place looks over for this season. Brendan Rogers will be looking to build on his side’s 5-0 thrashing of Swansea in their last league fixture but may have to do so without in-form forward Daniel Sturridge, who is a doubt after aggravating a thigh injury.
Martin Skrtel is fit again but may not be given a start ahead of either Daniel Agger or the retiring Jamie Carragher. Fabio Borini (shoulder) and Martin Kelly (knee) are the only long-term injury problems at Anfield.
