Nigel Adkins has hailed the attitude of his reading players, particularly young goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after the stopper helped the Royals earn a point against Liverpool at the weekend, according to the Liverpool
Reading are struggling in the Premier League, but the keeper put in an heroic display to help keep an impressive clean sheet in front of the club’s faithful at the Madjeski Stadium on Saturday.
The former Southampton boss said: “All the headlines will be about Alex McCarthy. He’s put in a fantastic display even though he’s been out for a while.
“We have some exceptional keepers here at Reading and a really good goalkeeping coach. I’m really pleased with the players, their attitude and application.
“We’ve kept a clean sheet and it’s fair to say Alex has pulled off some world-class saves. Alex will receive the headlines but I’m pleased with all the players today.”
Reading were outclassed for much of the match on Saturday but were able to hang on to earn a share of the spoils. Despite the result edging them closer to relegation back to the Championship, Adkins remains optimistic about the club’s future.
He added: “We won’t wait for relegation. We’ll just keep working on the training ground and take each game as it comes,” Adkins said.
“The atmosphere in the stadium was really good, the supporters got behind the players and the team gave the fans something to cheer so there’s a lot of positivity around the place.”
