Liverpool have been given a boost in their pursuit of highly rated Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, with the 24-year-old indicating that he is open to a transfer to Anfield, reports The
The Belgian international has been the subject of much attention from the Premier League, with the likes of Man United, Newcastle and Everton keeping tabs on his form and situation in the Netherlands.
Liverpool are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements following criticism of Martin Skrtel’s form and with veteran Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season.
They have identified Alderweireld as a long-term prospect – a view shared by Man United, who are thought to be considering the defender as a long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic.
Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuws, Alderweireld seemed to dismiss a move to Newcastle, but admitted Liverpool remains an option.
He said: “I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria.”
It is reported that the move could set Liverpool back a transfer fee to the tune of £8m.
