Arsenal have been quoted a £15m transfer fee if they want to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, the
Arsene Wenger is said to be eager to sign a new first choice goalkeeper and has considered the likes of Petr Cech, the Chelsea No. 1, Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Reina’s compatriot and fellow Barcelona alumnus, the Catalans’ current first choice Victor Valdes – but it was thought that Stoke’s former Portsmouth custodian Begovic would be the most likely to want to move to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal first asked about the chances of signing Begovic in January, the Mail adds, but were told that the Potters were not interested in selling the Bosnia international. However, Stoke signed Birmingham City’s England international Jack Butland late in the winter transfer window, loaning him back to the Championship for the rest of the season, but when Butland moves to Stoke full-time in the summer, it could pave the way for the departure of Begovic.
The Gunners face competition from Manchester United and Chelsea but it is thought that United have been put off by Stoke’s asking price. Chelsea could be willing to move for Begovic but only as back-up for Cech, with Thibaut Courtois, currently in his second season on loan at Atletico Madrid, to continue his development outside Stamford Bridge. But Begovic would not welcome moving clubs to become a reserve.
