Arsenal make first move for Barcelona ‘keeper

The Express has reported that Arsenal have opened talks with the agent of FC Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Victor Valdes over the possibility of a move to the Emirates this summer.

The 31-year-old Valdes, who has been a near ever present in the Barcelona goal for ten seasons is entering the final year of his contract, and Barcelona may consider selling him this summer as opposed to risking losing him for nothing.

Arsenal’s need for a new goalkeeper is well publicised as neither of Wojciech Szczesny or Lukasz Fabianski have succeeded in establishing themselves as an automatic pick for manager Arsene Wenger, with both suffering from injury blows and inconsistent form.

It is believed that Barcelona would be looking in the region of £10m should they decide to sell Valdes, but Arsenal are confident that a fee closer to £5m could be agreed due to the player’s contract situation, as well as the fact that Valdes has been open about his admiration of the English league.
