Arsenal summer transfer spree dependant on Champions League qualification

Arsene Wenger fears his planned summer spending spree could fail if Arsenal do not qualify for the Champions League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Wenger is said to be willing to spend around £70m on a number of players this summer, after coming under pressure from supporters for not splashing the cash more readily in recent years. Stevan Jovetic, the Fiorentina striker, is said to be the centrepiece of the manager’s plans but Wenger is concerned the likes of the Montenegro international will think twice about moving to the Emirates Stadium if the Gunners are not part of Europe’s top club competition.

As well as Jovetic, Wenger wants to sign a goalkeeper and a midfielder, with a right-back also possibly a priority should Bacary Sagna leave, which the Mirror claims is expected. Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat is a contender to replace the incumbent Sagna.

The newspaper also contends that this summer would be the biggest of Wenger’s 17 years at the helm of Arsenal, in terms of money spent, with Barcelona custodian Victor Valdes a potential target to replace Wojciech Szczesny. Wenger is also said to be keen on Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue.
