Rafael Benitez, the interim Chelsea manager, has said he believes the current campaign has been a great season for the Blues, with the potential for it to get even better, according to the
Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Monday, beating Manchester United at Stamford Bridge courtesy of a spectacular second-half strike from Demba Ba. They play Manchester City in the Wembley semi-final, with the winners playing either Wigan Athletic or Millwall, who will contest the other side of the draw.
Benitez’s team are also through to the latter stages of the Europa League, where they play Rubin Kazan this week and next, and are in contention to finish in the top four of the Premier League and thus qualify for next season’s Champions League.
However, Chelsea have not been a factor in the title race and lie 22 points adrift of leaders United, while their place in the top four is under threat from both Arsenal and Everton, who are two and four points behind respectively.
But Benitez insists Chelsea can already look back on a fine season that could get better between now and May. He said: “ We’re in the top four with a game in hand. We’re in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter finals of the Europa League. It’s a great season. It could be even better.
“My priority is the top four and trying to win the next game, in the Europa League. This win was very important for everyone here. The priority for us is to finish in the top four, we know that, but at a top side you have to win every competition.”
