Bent future looking bleak at Aston Villa after Liverpool snub

Darren Bent appears to be on the way out of Aston Villa, the Daily Mail has claimed, after the England striker was left out of the squad to play Liverpool despite recovering from a foot injury and training without a problem in the week leading up to the visit of the Reds.

Villa lost the match 2-1 to further threaten their Premier League status, having been a goal in front through Christian Benteke. A Jordan Henderson equaliser and a Steven Gerrard penalty sent the points to Merseyside to leave Paul Lambert’s side in the bottom three, level on points with 17th-placed Wigan Athletic but having played a game more.

Bent has not started a match for Villa since the end of January, against Newcastle, and though he has been injured, his foot problem cleared up over the international break and he was available for selection against Liverpool. But Lambert chose not to place the former Tottenham Hotspur striker on the bench, leaving him out of the squad of 18.

The newspaper adds that Andreas Weimann, who picked up a knock against the Reds, is expected to be fit for the next game and with that in mind, and the form of Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor, there does not appear to be a place for Bent at Villa Park under Lambert.

Bent moved to the Midlands in January 2011, joining from Sunderland, and has to date played 60 games for the club, scoring 24 goals.
