Arsenal legend Steve Bould believes that rival clubs’ European commitments can benefit the Gunners during the season’s run-in, reports The
The North Londoners are vying with the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea for fourth place in the Premier League this season, but the former Arsenal and Sunderland defender believes that their focus on just the league will give them an edge in the battle for Champions League qualification.
The Assistant Manager at the Emirates said: “Being in Europe can be a factor. It’s extremely tough, the travel. It can affect and I think sometimes, if a negative result comes along within that time span, it can affect your season. It’s going to be tough.”
Chelsea still have FA Cup commitments as well as those in the Europa League, and Spurs also face similar trips to the continent with a visit to Basel their next continental commitment.
With Arsenal only having the league left to concentrate on, Bould thinks that as long as they can keep their heads and focus on winning their own matches, they may well still reach next season’s top European competition.
The Gunners have not failed to qualify for the tournament in 16 years, but currently sit four points behind fourth placed Chelsea, with Spurs sitting between them, two behind the Blues and two ahead of their North London rivals.
