Chelsea believe they have beaten off the competition to sign Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao in a £46m deal, the
The newspaper adds that the Blues are so sure Falcao will be heading for Stamford Bridge that they turned down the chance to sign No. 2 target Edinson Cavani, despite being told Cavani would welcome the move to Chelsea if he was to leave Napoli for the Premier League. Chelsea instead want Falcao and Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle.
Owner Roman Abramovich will commit to not only the near-£50m transfer fee, should Falcao become a Chelsea player, but wages in the region of £200,000, the Mail adds, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could be loaned to Atletico for a third year as part of the deal.
Chelsea were keen on bringing Courtois back to England – with the intention of loaning him to a Premier League club – but if it helps smooth the Falcao transfer, the club will sanction another season spent in La Liga.
Falcao has been an Atletico player since August 2011, moving to the Vicente Calderon from Porto, scoring 65 goals in 81 appearances. This season, the 27-year-old has helped Atletico to third place in the table.
