Former Chelsea midfield lynchpin Michael Essien believes he will be making a return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, according to Sky
The 30-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by former Blues boss Roberto di Matteo in August, and linked up on loan with ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
Mourinho had signed Essien at Chelsea for nearly £25m from Lyon in the summer of 2005, and he became an important figure in the west Londoners’ league and cup successes of 2006 and 2007.
Lengthy injury spells halted his progress with the club, but his versatility has never been faulted, having made 30 appearances for Madrid in his loan spell.
However, the Ghanaian does not expect to stay at the Bernabeu, and believes he will be back in the squad at Chelsea next season, possibly under Mourinho, who continues to be linked with a shock return to the Stamford Bridge dugout having left in contentious circumstances in September 2007.
Essien told the Sport Review: “I have a contract at Chelsea and at present, I am only on loan here (at Madrid), so nothing has changed.”
