David Luiz has said that if Chelsea can win the Europa League and finish in the top four of the Premier League, then it will represent a successful season at Stamford Bridge, Sky
The current campaign has seen Chelsea change their manager in November, replacing Champions League winner Roberto Di Matteo with Rafael Benitez, become the first holders of the Champions League to fail to get out of the group stage, and reach the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup, FA Cup and Europa League. They were beaten by Swansea in the League Cup, Manchester City in the FA Cup and face Basel, conquerors of Tottenham Hotspur, in the Europa League.
Chelsea have also been in contention for a top four finish throughout the season, and Luiz believes that if the Blues can triumph in the Europa League and maintain their place in the Premier League’s top four then they can look back on the year with satisfaction.
“If you win the Europa League and stay to play Champions League next year of course it’s a success,” the Brazil international said. “ Some big teams in Europe don’t win titles this year, so of course it’s a success.”
Chelsea are fourth in the table, having played a game less than Tottenham Hotspur, who are fifth with the same number of points. Arsenal a point ahead in third, while Everton, who Chelsea play on the final day of the season, are sixth, three points adrift of Benitez’s side.
Luiz added that as it stands, the season has not been a success, but feels that can change between now and May and is looking forward to the next campaign. “ We have a difficult competition,” Luiz admitted.
“This season we want to win everything. Now we cannot win the league, but we can stay in the best position and we can win another European title. Work for that. The next season is the next season. The future.”
