Furious Millwall manager Kenny Jacket has criticised the decision of referee Gavin Ward to award Blackburn a late penalty in last night’s 2-1 defeat at The Den, reports Sky
Blackburn were awarded a penalty 12 minutes from time when Lions captain Danny Shittu was deemed to have tripped Grant Hanley in the box. And Jordan Rhodes tucked the spot kick home to ensure the Lancashire club took all three points back with them. Shittu was also red-carded at full-time due to his protests.
The result sees Rovers go above Millwall on the table and leaves Jacket’s side just four points above the drop zone, still needing another win out of their last three games to assure themselves of Championship safety.
Millwall had looked on course to get their precious win after Karleigh Osborne put the hosts ahead early in the first half. But David Jones equalised in the second half ahead of the controversial moment.
Jacket said: “That decision has cost us. I’ve just seen it again and it looked like a soft decision, in my opinion the referee got it wrong, it didn’t look like there was any contact.
“I was looking for the refereeing team to make the right call as it looked soft at the time, and having seen it again it was.”
