Sporting are said to want £10m for the 25-year-old, a product of Barcelona’s youth programme who, after struggling to make the grade with the Catalans, blossomed following a move to Seville.
Spending seven years at Sevilla, Capel joined Sporting in 2011 amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur. But with the club in dire financial straits, Liverpool are battling with Ligue 1 side Marseille to profit from Sporting’s troubles.
Capel has two caps for the Spain national team to his name, the last of which came in 2008, and he was part of the Spain side that won the European Under-21 Championships in 2011, and the Under-19 edition of the tournament five years earlier.
During his time at Sevilla, Capel claimed consecutive UEFA Cups, in 2006 and 2007, won two Spanish Cups and played almost 150 games.
