Man City line up signing of defender Novaretti

Manchester City have already started their summer transfer business, according to the Daily Mirror, by moving for the free transfer signing of Argentine defender Diego Novaretti, currently of Mexican outfit Tolouca.

The 27-year-old is said to have agreed a switch to the Premier League once his current contract expires this summer, reports in Italy have claimed. Novaretti began his career in the second division of Argentinean football, with Belgrano, and attracted attention from across South America thanks to his performances at the club.

However, he left in controversial circumstances, walking out on the club ahead of a crucial promotion fixture, and used a contractual loophole to escape his contract and move to Mexico. Tolouca eventually paid a third-party to take full control of Novaretti’s registration, with Novaretti’s performances earning him plaudits since moving to Central America.

Novaretti will join Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott, Kolo Toure and Matija Nastasic as Roberto Mancini’s central defensive options, with the Mirror claiming Novaretti is comfortable playing in a three-man defence, a tactic the Italian attempted to introduce to his side with little success earlier in the season.
