David Moyes has praised Victor Anichebe for his recent form and revealed his belief that if the striker keeps it up between now and the end of the season, his goals could take Everton into the Champions League, the
Anichebe was on target in Everton’s 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, netting in the second-half to put the match beyond the relegation-threatened Londoners. It was the Nigerian’s eighth goal of the season, with Moyes calling for a few more between now and the end of the campaign if Everton are to break into the Premier League’s top four.
“He has been terrific,” Moyes said. “The boy has an awful lot going for him and I’ve said many times he’s just needed to have a bit more self-confidence. I think he has a bit more to do but we have got signs of someone who could be an outstanding player.
“It has taken a while for him to show us that but how he has been playing is very good and is playing as well as anyone – but we needed it because we’ve been a bit short there. We just want him to keep playing the way he is doing; he is helping us at the moment and gives us an alternative,” the manager added.
Anichebe has come into the side for the out-of-form Nikica Jelavic, who has scored only once in the league since early December. Moyes believes that if Everton are to compete at the top end of the table, they need a goal scorer they can rely on to get into high double figures.
“I think for Everton we need people who are getting in double figures (for goalscoring). We’ve really missed someone getting in the high teens with their goals. I hope [Anichebe] gets some more because it will help us until the end of the season,” Moyes continued.
Everton are currently sixth in the league table, four points behind third-place Arsenal, the Toffees’ opponents on Tuesday evening.
