Jamie Carragher believes Luis Suarez ranks alongside Steven Gerrard as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, the
Carragher added that Suarez and Gerrard are the two greatest players he has played with in his long Reds career, as the former England centre-back nears retirement at the end of the season.
Suarez has scored 29 goals this season, 22 of them coming in 30 Premier League appearances, while Gerrard has played every minute of Liverpool’s league programme thus far and netted the match-winning penalty against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday. It was Suarez who drew the foul and won the penalty.
Carragher could not split the two in terms of where they rank in the echelon of great Liverpool players, but did back Suarez to claim an individual award this season. “ Every side has a couple of players who you hope can turn things for you and Luis does it on a weekly basis for us,” Carragher said.
“I’ve played with a lot of top players here and I’ve always said Stevie was the best player I’ve played with, but Luis is definitely on his shoulder, he is very close,” the 32-year-old said. “He put in another top performance against Villa and shows why he deserves to be PFA Player of the Year.”
